For anyone visiting Tokyo, it is hardly unusual to find train stations covered in promotional campaigns for a new anime, manga, video game, or character.

But when those campaigns feature artwork that some people consider particularly provocative, the conversation can change very quickly.

But when those campaigns feature artwork that some people consider particularly provocative, the conversation can change very quickly.

That is exactly what happened with Seitokai ni mo Ana wa Aru!, the school comedy based on the manga by Muchimaro, whose television anime adaptation is currently airing during the fall 2026 anime season.

A promotional campaign installed in Ikebukuro, one of Tokyo’s busiest areas, drew criticism online because of the artwork used in the advertisement. Some people questioned whether such imagery was appropriate for a public transit environment, where commuters and passersby are exposed to the campaign regardless of whether they are familiar with the series.

And this is where things get interesting.

Is artwork that works perfectly well for an anime’s target audience still appropriate when it is displayed in a place where absolutely everyone can see it?

🚇 The Seitokai ni mo Ana wa Aru! Advertisement That Started the Debate

The promotional campaign for Seitokai ni mo Ana wa Aru! was installed around Ikebukuro Station as part of the marketing for the anime and its original manga.

The official series account had previously announced promotional displays at JR Ikebukuro Station during October, putting the series directly in front of one of Tokyo’s largest daily audiences.

However, some commuters reacted negatively to the campaign.

Comments began circulating online from people who felt that the artwork was too provocative for a public setting. One woman who encountered the advertisement reportedly expressed her discomfort on social media, questioning why imagery of this nature was being displayed so openly in an everyday transit environment.

The discussion subsequently spread through Japanese social media and anime-related discussion sites, with opinions ranging from criticism of the campaign to people arguing that provocative anime advertising is hardly a new phenomenon in Japan.

And, naturally, once the internet gets involved, the conversation becomes considerably larger than a single poster. 😅

The debate quickly expanded into a broader question:

What kind of anime advertising is appropriate for public spaces?

👀 Why Is Seitokai ni mo Ana wa Aru! at the Center of the Controversy?

Part of the answer lies in the identity of the series itself.

Seitokai ni mo Ana wa Aru! is a four-panel comedy manga, written and illustrated by Muchimaro, which began serialization in Weekly Shonen Magazine from Kodansha in April 2022.

The story follows Ume Mizunoe, a first-year student who excels at literature but struggles badly with science.

In an attempt to avoid repeating the school year, Ume joins the student council at Fujinasu Academy.

Naturally, things do not exactly go according to plan.

Instead of finding a quiet environment where he can focus on his studies, Ume ends up surrounded by an extremely eccentric group of student council members, including the charismatic but temperamental president Hisako Kotobuki, the refined and intimidating treasurer Arisu Terui, the mischievous Tan Otori, and the young Komaro Michinoku.

The series combines school comedy, romance, absurd situations, suggestive humor and fanservice, all of which are important parts of its identity.

So the provocative nature of the advertising campaign did not exactly come out of nowhere.

The real question is the context.

There is a difference between encountering this kind of artwork because you deliberately picked up the manga or searched for the anime online, and encountering it unexpectedly while walking through a train station.

🎌 Anime, Fanservice and Public Spaces: A Debate That Keeps Coming Back

This is probably the most interesting part of the entire controversy.

Japan is internationally famous for the enormous presence of anime, manga, video games and fictional characters in public spaces. Train stations, shopping centers, buildings and entire commercial districts can temporarily become giant showcases for a franchise.

For anime fans, that can be part of the fun.

For people who are not interested in anime, however, the experience can be very different.

And that distinction becomes particularly important when an advertising campaign uses fanservice or heavily sexualized character designs.

A campaign displayed inside a train station cannot choose who sees it.

That is precisely what makes this controversy interesting.

The target audience of an anime and the audience exposed to its advertising are not necessarily the same people.

Someone may have absolutely no interest in Seitokai ni mo Ana wa Aru! and still encounter its characters during their daily commute.

Which brings us to the eternal question of otaku marketing:

How far can a promotional campaign go to grab people’s attention before it becomes uncomfortable for people outside the fandom?

There is no universal answer.

And that may be exactly why this debate keeps coming back.

✨ The Anime Is Also Getting Attention Beyond the Poster Controversy

While the advertising campaign has generated discussion, Seitokai ni mo Ana wa Aru! is also making its way through the crowded Fall 2026 anime season.

The anime adaptation is being produced by Passione, a studio known for working on numerous anime productions featuring mature themes, ecchi elements and fanservice.

The series is directed by Naoyuki Tatsuwa, with Masahiro Yokotani handling series composition and scripts.

Ryo Imamura is responsible for character designs and serves as chief animation director, while Tomoki Kikuya handles the music.

The opening theme is performed by Sangatsu no Phantasia, adding another recognizable name from the Japanese music scene to the production.

In other words, while the promotional artwork is generating controversy, the anime itself is also trying to stand out during a particularly busy anime season.

📚 What Is Seitokai ni mo Ana wa Aru! About?

For anyone who has not discovered the series yet, Seitokai ni mo Ana wa Aru! originally began as a yonkoma, or four-panel manga.

The story takes place at the prestigious Fujinasu Academy and follows Ume Mizunoe, a student who finds himself joining the student council in an attempt to avoid repeating the school year.

What should have been a simple academic strategy quickly turns into a collection of increasingly ridiculous situations.

The student council is packed with characters whose personalities could not be more different, and their interactions are the main engine behind the comedy.

The result is a school comedy that combines:

🎌 School anime

😂 Comedy

💕 Romance

👀 Fanservice

🎭 Eccentric characters

📚 Manga adaptation

✨ Slice of life

🔥 Suggestive humor

And yes, the title itself makes it pretty clear that this is not exactly going to be a conventional school comedy.

🧠 Is the Problem the Poster or the Location?

This may be the most interesting question raised by the entire situation.

There are two reasonable sides to this discussion, and neither necessarily requires being “anti-anime.”

On one hand, a franchise should be able to market itself according to its own identity.

If Seitokai ni mo Ana wa Aru! is built around provocative comedy and fanservice, completely removing those elements from its advertising could mean stripping away part of what makes the series recognizable.

On the other hand, a train station is not an anime convention, manga store or specialized website.

The people who see the advertisement include anime fans, casual viewers and people who may have never heard of the series.

That changes the equation.

The question does not necessarily have to be whether an illustration is “too provocative” in absolute terms.

A better question might be:

Is this particular image appropriate for the specific environment where it is being displayed?

That distinction matters enormously in advertising.

An illustration that works perfectly well on a manga cover, inside an anime magazine or on a website aimed at fans of the genre may receive a very different reaction when it occupies a giant advertising space inside a busy train station.

🍿 And Here’s Where Things Get a Little Uncomfortable…

As an anime and otaku media outlet, it would be very easy to simply say:

“If you don’t like it, don’t look at it.”

But that would be an overly simple answer.

Otaku culture has accomplished something huge in Japan and around the world: anime, manga and Japanese pop culture have moved far beyond specialized stores, conventions and dedicated communities.

That is fantastic.

But when a hobby becomes increasingly visible in mainstream society, it also comes into contact with people who do not share the same cultural references or fandom.

And friction is inevitable.

The real question may not be whether Seitokai ni mo Ana wa Aru! should be allowed to use fanservice in its advertising.

Of course it can.

The more interesting question is how, where and for whom that fanservice should be used.

Because a good advertising campaign should make people curious about a series.

It should make them want to know more.

Not necessarily leave someone wondering why they had to encounter that particular image while simply trying to catch a train. 😅

🔥 What Do You Think?

The controversy surrounding the Seitokai ni mo Ana wa Aru! poster raises a debate we may see more often as anime, manga and otaku culture continue to occupy more public spaces.

Do you think anime series should be allowed to use provocative artwork on train station advertisements?

Should promotional campaigns adapt their imagery depending on where they are displayed?

Or do you think that, as long as the material is legal and reflects the identity of the franchise, there is no real problem?

We want to hear what the OTAKUTSUGI community thinks.
